Denotation and Connotation

Connotations:

In this advert for WaterAid, the language connotes the struggle that people face without water and basic hygiene needs and how it sometimes leads to deaths. The emptiness in the child's eyes connotes the lack of supplies and necessities people have to live without and how they cannot live comfortably nor safely without. The image of the child creates sympathy and pity for the child's scarcity of needs and this is a strategy to convince those to donate. They've specifically decided to capture a dry and parched setting to show the immediate need of water supplies.

Denotations:

In this advert for WaterAid, I can see a dry landscape and huts. The little denotation used in this advert displays the fact that the purpose for this , is to show the desperation of water needed in deprived countries and how it affects children and causes death.

Connotations:

In this advert for Rimmel London mascara, the use of the woman in the image , Maya Jama, connotes as a marketing strategy for viewers to purchase the item as she is someone who is well know and and liked by many so having her advertise the product, viewers may want to buy it as well. The use of alliteration "Long Live Lashes" is a catchy and convincing slogan . It connotes the fondness the company has for lashes and this could reach a specific audience of girls or women who particularly like have long lashes and believe it boots their appearance. The phrase "Long Live" relates to something of worth and class, and links to the fact that Rimmel has been around for years and is well known brand. Maya Jama, who is a familiar face on the show "Love Island", is all about appearance and capturing the attraction of others so having her be the face of a makeup advert, shows that a woman who is know for her beauty, is wearing a specific mascara, will attract customers. The clothing that she is wearing looks of worth and chic so that high sense of fashion, links to the quality of the brand.

Denotations:

In this advert, we can see bold and bright slogans across the screen, fog in the background and a woman holding the product advertised.

Extension:

a.

I think the idea behind this image is particularly clever as it highlights how little sugar the lollipop contains, as the colony of ants are avoiding the sweet. Ants are known to be attracted to sugar, so having them avoid the sweet illustrates the lack of sugar which will attract people to purchase as the target age for this specific sweet is aimed for children. As a result, parents wont feel bad for feeding their children too much sugar.

b.

In my opinion, this advert for spreading awareness on childhood obesity is very tactical. The use of the ice cream , which is a common liked sweet treat amongst most, connotes how this food packed with sugar can actually lead to harming your child's health.

Key concept Analysis

Language: The title and tag line are all indicators that this is a film poster. In addition, the title includes the number 2 meaning that this movie is a sequel and the first film was liked by viewers, hence the fact that a second one was made. The protagonist is standing on a podium surrounded by a vast group of his followers aka "minions". The ombre of colours in the sky indicate that this is an animate children's film.

Industry: The film was produced by Illumination Entertainment and created by Sergio Pablos, Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio. Sergio Pablos has also created other well known films such as : "Smallfoot" and "Klaus". All these films are animated and are children's films.

Audience: This film seems to have a target audience of predominantly children with an estimated age range of 5-10. The comedy and graphics of the film gain the attraction of children as the script falls into line of what a child would consider entertaining or funny. The graphics and colours appeal the eyes of infants. As well as the target audience being aimed a predominantly children, there are moments in the film that would be in interest of adults as many watch/monitor their children's screen intake so having moments that engage the parents that attracts more viewers.

Representation: The protagonist plays the role of a villain and he portrays the characteristics as someone funny and cunning. In the entirety of all the films, "Gru" , the protagonist, plays a façade as his ambition is to be seen as someone with a villainous nature and cunning ideas, however, in reality, his true nature is someone who is funny and likable. The poster displays his power and position as he stood towering his associates below him. The image of the vibrant also links to the plot of the film as the main characters agenda is to steal the moon and the image of the galaxy before him shows that.
